You would write the names of your friends on a mirror and invoke the name of Bloody Mary five times, in hopes of getting the apparition to appear. I don't know about you, but I never made it past saying her name three times. There was something about her legend that froze the lips of the bravest souls. Honestly, as of this writing, I don't know of anyone who ever finished the game. Maybe that's the biggest problem I have with John Stecenko's direct-to-DVD release, The Legend of Bloody Mary.

The story surrounds a troubled college student, Ryan (Paul Preiss), who has been suffering from nightmares for the past eight years, since his sister mysteriously vanished after playing the titular childhood game. From there, the story jumps from the present, to the 1600s (where we learn why and how Mary Worth (Caitlin Wachs) excommunication from the Puritan church) and to 2001, where we learned how Ryan's sister Amy (Rachel Taylor) disappeared after playing the game.

In short, this movie stole an hour and thirty minutes of my life and there is no way I can get it back. I have a firm rule when it comes to horror movies, when you see tits in the first five minutes of the film, the movie usually a train wreck. Now, while I wouldn't call this movie a train wreck, it's at least an auto accident. Let's remove the stale dialogue, erratic pacing and cheesy effects. The biggest flaw with TLoBM is the lack of any real terror. Stecenko relies too much on quick cuts, and scary music to frighten viewers. What we see is what has been overdone in the genre. TLoBM is no different, just one bloody mess.

Ready or not here comes Kolb

I've had some time to think about McNabb's departure from the Eagles and what it means to me as a long-time Eagles fan. For the past 11 years, I have watched McNabb grow into the role of a quality QB. He wasn't perfect, but more times than not, we had successful seasons. With McNabb at the helm, we even made an appearance in the 2004 Super Bowl. I can honestly say each year was at least exciting to watch if nothing else. (Okay, maybe we had a few shitty years, but nine years out of 11 isn't too shabby.)

But now Donovan is with the Washington Redskins and Kevin Kolb is the new leader of our team. Surprised? No. Kolb was brought into the Eagles’ organization to eventually take over the team from McNabb. Sooner or later it was going to happen. Kolb came to the Eagles in the 2007, drafted 36th overall. He sat on the sidelines, learning the game and filling in as needed. He paid is dues and an understudy and now his time is now. In my opinion, he's neither a good quarterback nor a bad one. He is, however, an untested quarterback.

Let me get this off my chest now. I don't hate Kevin Kolb and I don't love McNabb. I love the Eagles team. Get it? It's not an individual for whom I cheer, but the entire team. So I can say this without being biased; we don't know how Kolb is going to fare this year. During the 2009-2010 season, he had two stellar appearances against teams that had abysmal records. But we don't know how he's going to perform this season against quality defenses like Dallas, Minnesota, Chicago, Indianapolis, or even a newly-bolstered Washington. The 2010-2011 season is going to be one of the toughest in recent years for the Birds. And as everyone knows at this point, we Philadelphia fans can be a demanding bunch.

Kolb isn't the only unknown we Eagles fans face? How will the offense line hold up this year? Will our team take the field healthy and ready to play? Or will injuries force players to fill positions they aren’t usual Will the defense be able to step up their game? Will the Birds get rid of that stupid Wildcat crap now that every team in the NFL knows what to expect? There are so many questions this season. But what I do know is that I will be sitting in front of the television for every snap, looking for the answers.

Like it or not, Kolb is here to stay. He's a part of the team. And as a member of the Philadelphia Eagles, I have to throw my support behind him.

Blur looks to redefine the racing genre

I received an invitation to beta test the multiplayer component of Bizarre Creations' newest racing sensation, Blur [website]. Honestly, I hadn't heard anything about the game. Apparently, the developers were talking about the game on MTV last week, but since I don't watch much television, I guess I missed it. While I am not the biggest racing fan, I'm always up for a good multiplayer challenge, so I signed up, took their survey and received my download token.

I’ll admit, I wasn’t a fan of Bizarre’s Project Gotham Racing. In fact, the only racing game I really enjoyed was EA’s Burnout Paradise. Could Blur provide me with an equally enjoyable experience?

Think of it this way, if Burnout and Mario Kart had a baby it would be this game. It's insane, face-paced fun with realistic vehicles. With offensive weapons like Shock (an EMP that short-circuits opponent vehicles), Shunt (a slow projectile with homing capabilities), Barge (pushes surrounding vehicles from around you) and defensive weapons like Nitro, Repair and Shield, players will spend hours trying to blast their opponents to Kingdom Come. And this is all just in the multiplayer demo. In short, you race, gain prestige in the form of fans and use the notoriety to unlock better cars and modifications.

One of the most highly anticipated features is a robust cross-platform that will allow Xbox 360 (yes, including you folks with the silver memberships), PS3 and PC players to square off against each other. This feature alone may be worth the price of admission. Finally, age-old arguments will be settled. (I'm drafting my PS3 hit list as we speak.) Bizarre hasn't said if the leader boards will be cross platform; but who cares. This is about bragging rights.

I love this game. The graphics look great, the tracks are challenging, yet allow players to focus more on strategy and the weapons are fun to use. You really get the feeling that you are in the race of your life. With projectiles flying everywhere, you need agility as well as speed. Don't worry, your hard work gets rewarded in the end in the form of end-race rewards that add additional points to your score. I'm hoping the in-game trophies will translate into achievements for the player's gamercard. If the Bizarre team can make good on their promises of cross-platform play, then Blur will be a must-own title on any platform.

Blur takes to the streets on May 25, 2010.

Photos courtesy of Bizarre Creations

Routing for a new wireless router

I loved my Linksys WRT56G router. However, it finally died on me this past week. It had been showing its age for a minute. My PCs would lose their wireless connections for no apparent reason. I bought an extender, but I it was too much trouble configuring it for my network.

Being the typical starving artist, I shopped around for a new router. I didn't have a lot of money to spend on the equipment, that meant the local stores were out. It seemed when I needed a router most, there weren't any deals my pockets could appreciate. I tried doing the general search, but most results came back from paid advertisers who's products sat at the top of search results not for the quality of the product, but because of the fee they paid.

One of the best tools for comparing prices for routers was ShopWiki. In addition to giving me the links to known companies, I was surprised at the deals offered by smaller companies. The detailed product reviews helped me make an informed decision in picking out a router. I like Linksys' products, but I had problems with my Windows 7 machine picking up the connection. I didn't have a problem under XP, Vista or Ubuntu, so I wasn't completely sure I knew what the problem was.

I ended up purchasing a Belkin router online. It was affordable and it did the job well. Whether on Linux or Windows, I have no problems keeping an active wireless connection on my computers. Shopping online can be a hassle, but if you take the time to really compare prices, you'd be amazed at the money you will save.

Kanye's should take time off to check himself...into rehab

After watching the replay of Kanye's heartfelt apology for pissing on Taylor Swift's MTV's Video Music Award acceptance speech on Jay Leno, I came up with only one conclusion: bullshit.

The man doesn't care that he snatched the mic from a kid and basically said, sorry, but you suck and someone else is better than you and skipped off the stage. What he cares about in hindsight is that he put his foot up his ass.

Did he hope to win favor with Beyonce and ultimately Jay-Z? Or could it the Hennessey he was slurping down throughout the night. Whatever it is, Kanye knows that he messed up, and worse, messed up on national television.

He's told Jay Leno he's taking some time off. While I'm sure many fans are lining up to get their jerseys, I'm scratching my head at the signing. Don't get me wrong, I'm not against the Eagles strengthening the quarterback spot since McNabb is walking around with cracked ribs. (He was injured during a 3-yard TD run in a 38-10 win over the Carolina Panthers.) However, with Reid expressing his confidence for (not so) heir-apparent Kevin Kolb to take the reins should McNabb be unable to play, and with Michael Vick being eligible to play in week three, should the Birds bring in a quarterback who might not even take a snap?

I can see where the "insurance" part of Reid's thinking comes into play. It could motivate Kolb to be the quarterback Reid is hoping he could be. It's not that Kevin's a bad quarterback. Hell, he's even been really good a times, but there aren't many opportunities for him to play. He doesn't get that many reps in practice so basically, he's a glorified bench warmer. Now, add Vick and Garcia to the mix and it looks like if Kolb doesn't produce, then he will find himself on the bench.

And, yes, while Garcia is familiar with the Eagles offense, Vick is the better athlete. If Vick is your No. 2, then when he's eligible to play, you should put him in the role for which he's being paid. If the Eagles allow Garcia to start ahead of Vick, then why in the hell did we sign Vick?

Sure, we can always utilize Vick in ways we can't with Garcia, Kolb or McNabb. But is putting him in such a limited role worth the money he's being paid? Look, I'm an Eagles fan and not a player fan. So in the end I don't care who starts or who plays what position so long as we win. I want to see the Eagles in the Super Bowl this year. We have too much talent not to get there.

And that is on what the Eagles are counting.

Adding Garcia to the mix bolsters the offence. It gets the fans involved and it takes some of the heat off the organization should Vick prove to be a bust. There's no denying that Garcia won over the fans three years ago. But that was then and this is 2009.

The Eagles need to at least make it to the Super Bowl for this season to be considered a success. With all the moves and the controversial signings, the Eagles are hoping to make a run for the Super Bowl this year. With the talent that's on the team, there is a good chance Eagles football could continue well into February 2010.

Then only question that remains is which quarterback will be at the helm when that time comes.

I think XP just gave up the ghost

Just when I thought my computing troubles were behind me, I got hit with the infamous Blue Screen of Death (BSOD). It happened in middle of a report I was writing for AllVoices.com when it happened. Since I'm not a stranger to the BSOD, I reached for my Windows XP CD so I could slap the operating system back on to my Asus 1005HA. Somewhere between realizing that Dreamweaver didn’t have an external DVD drive and reaching for my Linux Mint USB key, I got the strange idea to install Vista on my netbook instead and give it a go. At this point, what did I have to lose?

I'm sure there are those asking why I would want Vista on my netbook. With all the negativity toward the four-year old OS, why would I want to strangle my Asus darling with such bloatware? I guess it appealed to my inner geek.

Let’s be honest; Windows XP is almost nine years old. While XP continues to be default operating system for many business and home users, Microsoft has said more than once that it will pull the life support plug on the product and did so earlier this year. (You may already notice that you can't buy a retail version of XP in stores. This leaves users having to rely on the OEM CD (DVD) that came with the original PC or hunting down a copy of XP in the wild that’s free of viruses, trojans and other malware.

Since I have a desktop that came with Vista Business (that's currently running Ubuntu 8.10) I have a legal product key going to waste. Why not put the product to good use? I am not a Vista hater and while Windows 7 is still over a month away, why not upgrade my netbook with the oft-maligned Vista? After creating a Vista Installation USB, I loaded the Business version onto my Asus. I went with the version for which license I owned. I'm sure to have violated some minute bylaw in the Microsoft licensing agreement, no sense incurring Redmond's full wrath.

Surprisingly, the installation was painless. Apparently the original drivers that came with my netbook were Vista compatible because they loaded without so much as a hiccup. Within an hour, the standard Vista desktop greeted me.

I'm happy with Vista’s performance on Dreamweaver. With 2GB RAM, the operating system and applications run smooth. I am currently listening to iTunes, typing in Windows Live Writer while checking my e-mail using Outlook 2007. (Screenshot) While I wouldn't recommend opening more than three programs at once, overall I would say that installing Vista on Dreamweaver was a good experience. (Netbooks are made to be laptops anyway with their limited Atom processor.)

With people praising Windows 7 RTM and the earlier release candidate, I can't wait to throw it on Dreamweaver and see how it handles. I am going to hold off on that, however, until Windows 7 ships in late October. Until then, I will keep writing on my Vista netbook.

Microsoft dodges yet another bullet

Microsoft pulls a rabbit out the hat and gets a stay of i4i's injunction that was supposed to go into effect on October 10. Microsoft can continue selling Word (used by 500 million users) while both Team Redmond and Team Toronto battle come out for the third and (hopefully) final act. Right now, Canadian-based i4i leads the series 2-1.

What does this mean for the average PC user? Nothing.

True, Microsoft has been found guilty of infringing upon i4i's "Custom XML" (CXML) patent. They were fined more than $290 million and ordered to discontinue selling Word until the offending XML could be excised from the word processor. But the biggest question of the day is this: What the hell is "Custom XML" and why would the average user care?

Scouring the net I found and article in eWeek discussing the mysterious CXML; and while it is like Open XML (the XML markup that is used in open-source software like OpenOffice.org Writer and AbiWord) it's nothing like Open XML. I'm not going to pretend to understand it; I just care if it is something that concerns the average user.

Microsoft spokesman Kevin Kutz said that CXML is not something the average person would use.
"[The debate] is about the way Microsoft Word handles certain kinds of code. In addition, the particular Custom XML functionality at issue is not used by most customers."

So the bigger issue is not whether the CMXL makes Word better (or worse), but that Microsoft should pay for using technology that someone patented. While I have no love for Microsoft, I would have to say that the lawsuit is bogus as best.

Word isn't in trouble. Word will still be available to businesses and home users alike. At best, Microsoft will remove CXML from Word and keep about its business. At the very least, Team Redmond and Team Toronto will sit down together, settle the matter and part as friends.

I4i will get its notoriety and make a lot of cash to boot.

Microsoft will continue to make future versions of Word, charge users a shitload of money for the product.

And we will gladly pay.

Microsoft: Racists or just bad at using Photoshop?

Is Microsoft racist? No; though I imagine that between this latest controversy and the infamous "Monkey" incident of 1999, there are folks who have their doubts. After pulling a doctored image from their Polish website, Microsoft is apologizing for replacing a black man with a white man in their business ad. While there are those think the software giant is the second coming of Jim Crowe, let's get real. There aren't that many black people in Poland. In fact, blacks make up only a fraction of the 2.7% “other" according to the 2002 Census.

It makes little sense to market a product using representatives that are not part of the target demographic. There are exceptions of course. Athletes, musicians and film celebrities can get away with pawning products off virtually to any demographic. Did you see the Softbank cell phone commercial starring Brad Pitt and grand-champion sumo wrestler Musashimaru?

Target marketing is marketing a particular product to a particular demographic. You wouldn't see a Payless ad in Esquire Magazine would you? The reason why you won't see the ad is because the general consensus at Esquire is that readership doesn't shop at discount shoe chain, so why not fill the space with a product readers would buy, like Rolex. Does that mean Esquire hates poor people? No. It means that they will advertise according to their readership.

So for people looking to create a fire where there's no smoke, get a life. Find something more constructive to do with your time and leave Microsoft and their shitty photo editing job alone.

Back on the bandwagon

I'm a fan of bodybuilding, whether it's the men or the women, I respect the torture that bodybuilders go through to sculpt their bodies into living works of art. No, I am not one of the gullible who believes that all bodybuilders have natural physiques. (That is why there are "natural" bodybuilding events.) However, I will argue anyone down that, whether roid monster or not, these folks bust their asses in the gym.

Now while I am a fitness fanatic, I'm no bodybuilder. I never used steroids and I have no intention to use the stuff. However, I love lifting weights and for a woman, I look like I lift weights...a lot.
At 5'10" and 206LBS, I can run 300 meters in about 63 seconds. My best bench is 215LBS and I can leg press 630LBS. While by most standards, I am in great physical shape, I am not where I want to be as far as my physique is concerned.

For one, I don't eat as clean as I should. Eating clean is eating healthy, preparing foods without added fats and sodium. I can eat clean when I try, but I'm lazy. Let me rephrase that, I don't have time to prepare the meals like I should. Sometimes it's easier to throw things together and scarf it on the run. However, I am close to my heaviest of 238LBS and that isn't good for me.

So, I am heading back to the gym on Wednesday. I am going to utilize technology to help keep me accountable. S&G, while a blog about whatever's on my mind, will also be a place where I'll rant about my forays into the fitness world. I will be using the Daily Burn website and their iPhone app to help keep track of the workouts and nutrition information.

I already know my goal is somewhere between 155 and 165LBS. At that weight, I look extremely toned (versus muscular), which allows me to look more feminine. Yes, for someone who likes to push weight, being feminine is important to me. Now, that doesn't mean I'm a priss. I'm quite the tomboy. I like football, MMA, video games and of course working out. I like slipping on a comfortable pair of sweats and a t-shirt. Now, when I go out, I do like to dress a little more "girly."

Reducing my bodyweight will help me looks smaller, while helping to retain my strength. It also takes additional weight off my knees. I plan to hit my goal in time for my birthday, which is at the end of October, so I have a little over a month. Will I succeed?

Who in the hell knows.

Should we boycott Shadow Complex?

Shadow complex has taken the gaming world by storm. The intense 2D shooter brings back the insane action of classics like Contra and Metroid. With its 3D rendered environments, multitudes of weapon and explosions that excite the demolitions expert in all of us, SC is one of the most popular downloads on the Xbox 360. It is also quickly becoming one of the most talked about video games in a social context.

There are many who are considering (or have considered) boycotting SC because of its affiliation with Orson Scott Card (of Enders Game fame). For the uninitiated, Card has staunch view against same-sex marriage and homosexuality in general. Because of his affiliation with the Shadow Complex game (both the game and Card's Enders books deal with a future civil war, where extremists on both side of the moral divide fight for their beliefs.

While the premise between SC and Card's work holds likenesses, Card himself had nothing to do with the creation, coding or design of the game. Simply put, Microsoft tied the game to a celebrity, adding name recognition to a game well-received by the gaming community.

The question remains, should consumers boycott a product because of the possible affiliation of any of the products associations? I guess that depends on the individual.

While playing shadow complex, I did not come across anything that would make me believe that anyone in the anti-gay rights movement had anything to do with the game. Hell, I was more taken back by the abuse a woman suffered early on in the game. (You'll know it when you see it.) Heck even that didn't stop me from buying the full game after I completed the demo.

Since card did not have anything to do with the hands on development of the game and the game doesn't scream anti-gay, anti-black or anti- (insert demographic) then why shouldn't I buy it?

Like television shows, books and movies, if you don't like something, there is no one pointing a rocket launcher at your skull screaming "buy it you (insert inflammatory word here)" and shoving the game into your chest.

Shadow complex is a good game. I am sure the developers, programmers and the little grunts who rarely get recognition would appreciate it if consumers would judge the game on its merits and not who's been paid to endorse the game.

C'mon download the demo. You would if you weren't such a pansy.

Doing my civic duty

Today is the day I do my duty as a Pennsylvania resident and attend Federal Grand Jury duty. I'm still trying to figure out why people get so wigged out when the phrase "jury duty" is mentioned. Think about it, you get paid to sit in a room all day and to see if you get picked to be on a panel to help determine a defendant's innocence or lack there of. You're not at work and you don't have to take off personal time to do it. With the number of people summoned (I was in a pool of 93 prospective jurors.)

Now, I'm no math wizard, but with 23 juror and 10 alternate spots open and 93 people attending. I have about in 1 in 3.5 chance of being chosen. As the slots fill up, the chances of getting picked become slimmer. So as I sit it in the courtroom, I am writing my thoughts in my Asus 1005HA netbook. You will hear me talk about this little gem a lot so get used to it. (Okay, I just found out I have to turn off the electrical equipment so I will continue writing as my break comes.)

Okay, break number one. I cannot believe that the federal government hasn't updated their jury instructional video in like 30 years. Seriously, there is like this whole early 70's thing going on. I'm sure all the actors are retired or dead at this point. However, I will say that I did learn a lot about the difference between jury duty and Grand Jury duty. while a standard jury listens to a case to determine if a defendant is innocent or guilty, a grand jury is more like an investigation to determine if a) there's enough evidence to indicate that a crime has been committed and b) is there enough evident to indicate that the accused could have committed the crime. So it's more like an investigative committee. The grand jury never meets the accused, but interviews witnesses and the federal prosecutor. (Gotta go again, break's over.)

Woot, we were discharged at noon and I emerged in the hot afternoon sun unscathed. All in all it was a good experience. I have the rest of my day to myself and I made $40 to boot!

Tell me he just didn't say that

I'm a home team fan. I bleed Eagles green. (You would have to if you grew up living with my father.) Be it a run into the playoffs or if our playoff hopes get dashed early in the season, I'm in front of the television every time the Birds take the field. So, with preseason 2009 underway I settled in front of the tube to see this year's crop of Eagles hopefuls along with the regular cast of characters. Would McNabb look good in the early showing? While Westbrook is still on the mend, how does LeSean McCoy look? Wow, we have a real fullback in Leonard Weaver this year; I wonder how he'll look? With DeSean Jackson, Kevin Curtis and Jeremy Maclin as primary receivers, would this be the year we learn to take chances down the field?

As the game played out and the first quarter came and went, I had mixed feelings about the game. Yes, it’s the first game of the preseason so it's all a feeling process and there were some glimmers of excitement coming from Maclin, Weaver and McCoy. I figured I would call my dad close to halftime to get his reaction on the game. Around 9:30 as I reached for my phone to give pop a call, I hear the words, "Michael Vick has signed a two-year deal with the Eagles."

It took a moment to sink in. Michael who? Did I hear right? Michael Vick? Oh shit! (I didn't realize my father picked up the phone on the last part.)

After telling him that I would call him back, I reached for my netbook and upon searching Michael Vick Eagles in Google, the Associate Press story was at the top of the search results. While details were sketchy it looked as if the Eagles were giving Vick a chance. But my question was why?

Don't get me wrong, I am all for second chances. Hell, I'm a parent so I am no stranger to giving someone a break. But is the Vick what the Eagles need right now? Well, I guess with the injury to Kevin Kolb being more severe than first thought, the answer to that question is yes.

I'm sure the Eagles organization knows what they are doing. While I can respect anyone for wanted to help out their fellow human being, the Philadelphia Eagles is still a business at heart and Jeffrey Lurie knows a good business venture where he sees it. With Reid and McNabb helping to mold Vick's character, the City of Philadelphia is the one of the best places to find redemption. Philly fans are notorious for their passion. Should Vick produce in the role he's expected to play we Philly fans will shower him with praise and adulation. If he messes up, then we'll boo his ass faster than we would Terrell Owens.

Let's be real, while Vick doesn't necessarily want to play second fiddle. He knows he has to start somewhere. He's been away from the NFL for two years. (Playing yard ball in prison doesn't count.) He is under fire from protesters and the NFL alike. Every move he makes from here until society has pardoned him in their hearts will be scrutinized. Vick is going to feel like someone's always watching him (to borrow from Rockwell). And you know something? He's right.

I'm not stupid not to realize what the man did. I read the news articles and listened to the reports on the radio (I don't watch a lot of television). What Michael Vick did was messed up; he's the first to tell you. But the man served the sentence that was imposed on him. He's doing whatever he needs to do to fulfill the requirements of his probation. Not to mention that he is only conditionally reinstated. NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell going to play the Vick situation close to the vest. Should the Eagles No. 2 quarterback not only produce but to continue to show he's a change man, you Goodell would have no choice to fully reinstate Vick. However, should Vick even flinch the wrong way, then he can join Cleveland Browns receiver Donte’ Stallworth sitting at home on Sundays watching the game from the living room instead of the sidelines.

And so it begins

This marks my foray into the world of blogging.
